Location: The Heritage Society
A long time friend of mine, Alison Bell, is the Executive Director at the well~known Heritage Society. She invited me to tour and take some pics, so I put on my old-fashioned Sunday best and had the most wonderful time! This property, right in the heart of downtown, is a must see for all Houstonians. The history here is phenomenal.
Founded in 1954, the mission of The Heritage Society (THS) is to tell the stories of the diverse history of Houston and Texas through collections, exhibits, educational programs, video and other media. Set in the tranquil Sam Houston Park between Buffalo Bayou and City Hall, The Heritage Society is the largest complex of professionally curated and restored buildings in the region. To complement our museum gallery and ten historic Houston houses, THS also provides a full range of educational opportunities that are designed to engage both school children and adults. Rotating exhibitions, an ambitious array of educational video and regular lecture programs cover a broad range of cultural and civic topics that are relevant to Houston audiences. Over time, The Heritage Society’s activities have grown to encompass a variety of educational programs that celebrate Houston’s history and vibrant culture. Among these activities are house tours, exhibitions, lectures, feature length and short videos, teacher’s workshops, school tours and special events. THS programs and events are supported by more than 100 community volunteers who serve as docents, conduct tours and assist curatorial staff in researching, cataloguing and organizing collections. For those who already love history or are looking to kindle an affair with our past, The Heritage Society is the place to start.
