Location: Elizabeth Anthony
Los Angeles based designer, Kevan Hall, was recently in Houston to serve as a judge for For The Sake of Art wearable art competition and to hold a trunk show at Elizabeth Anthony. I got to spend some time with him as a fellow judge and also trying on his amazing clothes at Elizabeth Anthony. Win win!
Part of his collection, Kevan Hall Signature, was inspired by the 1970’s.
Think sequins, Studio 54, Donna Summer and dancing. He had embellished sequined tops, skirts and pants. This emerald green jumpsuit I’m wearing would make any woman want to go out and party in style! Another side of his collection was inspired by Capri, Italy. The rich colors, resort feel, and decorative prints. I fell in love with the feminine butterfly dress I’m wearing.
In 1998 Kevan was called in to revive the house of Halston and served as Creative Director there for 3 years. This stint exposed him to major fashion houses as well as celebrities. In 2002 Kevan launched his own line, Kevan Hall Collection as has since succeeded to dress fashionable women all over the country. Some of his celebrity clients include Renee Zellweger, Vanessa Williams, Tina Fey, Michelle Obama, Taraji P. Henson, and Kerry Washington.
Hall has made guest appearances on national TV shows such as Inside Edition, Extreme Makeover, The Better Half, SoapTalk, the Jane Pauley Show, TV Guide’s- the Fashion Team and E! Fashion Police where he discussed fashion‘s current trends on and off the Red Carpet. Hall was also featured on Kimora Lee Simmons: Life in the Fab Lane as he dressed her for Vogue’s Met Ball. Hairstylist to the stars, Kim Kimble’s LA Hair created a fashion photo shoot featuring the Kevan Hall Signature collection in Fall 2012 and a fashion show presentation for Spring 2013.
Besides trying on his clothes, I asked Kevan a few questions:
~ Beth “Tell us something humorous about yourself”
~ Kevan “I love to sing!- lots of loud singing in the shower. I grew up singing gospel music as a kid.
~ Beth – “What occupation would you be in if not a designer“?
~ Kevan – ” I would be an architect. I would still be creating something beautiful and lasting. My Dad was a developer in Detroit and I found this inspiration when accompanying him to construction sites.
~ Beth – “How did you get into fashion”?
~ Kevan – ” I did a lot of sketching while watching TV when I was a kid. I would reimagine what the celebrities could be wearing. Went to Cass Tech High school in Detroit, which is a well known magnet school. Diana Ross went there. I then attended FIDM in Los Angeles.
~ Beth – “Do you have any irrational fears”?
~ Kevan – “No. I don’t fear anything. I’m very positive and feel that things will always work out the best. My scriptural belief. “All things work together for good for them that love God”
~ Beth – “Tell us about your daughter”
~ Kevan – “She founded a company called Neon Cowboys. They make illuminated cowboy hats that glow like neon signs www.neoncowboys.com.
~ Beth ” I’ll be in LA this summer”!
~Kevan ” See you then!!”
